The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Melvill J. Lougheed (ASN: 62743), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On the morning of 23 April 1952, Lieutenant Lougheed was a member of a rescue patrol of Company A whose mission was to attack the enemy-held outpost, “Nori”, in the vicinity of Majon-Ni, Korea, and recover the bodies of two fellow soldiers. As the group proceeded, they encountered an intense concentration of mortar fire but succeeded in evacuating one of the bodies that lay on the reverse slope. Lieutenant Lougheed then maneuvered his men to the left slope, placing them advantageously for an assault on “Nori” where the second body lay. As the friendly troops advanced toward the objective, a vicious raking fire was lain upon them by hostile forces. Lieutenant Lougheed exposed himself to this fire to lead the assault against the entrenched enemy on the crest of the hill. With words of encouragement he pressed his troops forward and only when the friendly forces suffered a serious casualty and their ammunition supply was expended, did Lieutenant Lougheed give the order to withdraw. He supervised the withdrawal with such calmness and confidence that he effected an orderly withdrawal through heavy artillery and mortar fire with a minimum of casualties. Lieutenant Lougheed’s conspicuous gallantry and outstanding devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
