The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Alfred E. Loughlin (ASN: 0-1878990), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery C, 49th Field Artillery Battalion, 7th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Kumhwa, Korea. On 19 October 1952, while attached to an Infantry unit as Forward Artillery Observer, Lieutenant Loughlin remained in a constantly exposed position and braved intense enemy small arms, mortar, and artillery fire in order to better direct the supporting friendly artillery. After he was wounded Lieutenant Loughlin refused aid and evacuation until his fire caused the enemy to withdraw. The heroic action of Lieutenant Loughlin reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
