The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Byron C. Lotshaw (ASN: RA-3856459), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 16 September 1950 in the vicinity of Changnyong, Korea. The advance of Company L, which had launched an attack against well-entrenched enemy positions, was halted by intense enemy fire. Sergeant Lotshaw, disregarding the heavy fire, stood upright and moved through his platoon encouraging his men to resume the assault. Shouting to his troops to follow him, he charged forward. The troops, observing their leader’s utter fearlessness immediately followed him in the attack, closing with and overrunning the enemy. During this attack, Sergeant Lotshaw single-handedly assaulted an enemy machine gun and killed three of its crew with rifle fire. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant Lotshaw reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
