The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) George Losak (ASN: 0-983626), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery B, 37th Field Artillery Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 19 July 1952 in the vicinity of Puhung-ni, Korea. On that date Lieutenant Losak was attached as Forward Observer to an Infantry unit engaged in attacking Hill 266, better known as “Old Baldy”. During the ensuing actions the enemy placed an intense mortar and artillery barrage on the friendly units. Lieutenant Losak, without regard for personal safety, remained exposed, observing enemy activities and requesting fire missions as needed. He was wounded by mortar fragments but returned to his assignment immediately after receiving medical treatment. Lieutenant Losak’s devotion to duty enabled the friendly artillery to give the Infantry maximum support in their attack on “Old Baldy”. The gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Losak reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
