The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) George T. W. Lore (ASN: 0-2262774), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery B, 39th Field Artillery Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 24 April 1951, near Taejon-ni, Korea, Lieutenant Lore, a field artillery forward observer, was attached to Company E, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, when that unit, occupying a defensive position, was suddenly attacked during the hours of darkness by a large enemy force. Realizing the serious plight of the company and the need for supporting artillery fire, Lieutenant Lore braved the withering hostile fire and moved to an exposed position under direct enemy fire and observation. Despite the hostile breakthrough of the company perimeter which carried the enemy to within 40 yards of the command post, he remained in position and continued to direct and adjust accurate artillery fire on the attacking force. His fearless and courageous actions were instrumental in inflicting an estimated 1,000 enemy casualties and aided in gaining the necessary lull in the battle that enabled Company E to withdraw to more tenable positions. Lieutenant Lore’s gallantry, initiative, and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the high traditions of the military service.
