The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Diego Lopez-Ruiz (ASN: US-50102172), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 2d Battalion, 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 23 December 1951, near Sangnyon-Myon, Korea, Company F had the mission of assaulting a well-entrenched hostile force on Hill 200. During this action Sergeant Lopez-Ruiz, Platoon Sergeant of the Second Platoon, realizing the importance of securing the hill, fearlessly led his platoon through devastating enemy mortar, grenade and small-arms barrage, and when wounded by flying fragments, he refused medical aid in order to continue the assault. After reaching the summit of the ridge he reorganized his platoon, aided and insured that all wounded were evacuated, and remained in defensive positions until ordered to withdraw. Sergeant Lopez-Ruiz’ heroic action reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
