The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Manuel A. Lopez (ASN: RA-38442501), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 8 September 1950 near Yongsan, Korea. On the night of that date the defensive perimeter of his company, located on Hill 189, was subjected to a fierce enemy attack. As a rocket launcher gunner he was in position at the foot of the hill. Realizing that more fire power was needed to repulse the numerically superior enemy force he voluntarily left his covered position and dashed through heavy hostile fire to the top of the hill. Firing point blank at the enemy and manifesting complete disregard for his own safety, he held his position on the fire-swept perimeter until the enemy assault was repulsed with heavy losses. His fearless actions were a tremendous inspiration to all who witnessed them, and he undoubtedly saved his unit many casualties. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant Lopez on this occasion reflects the highest credit upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
