The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Capain Arthur George Elser (AFSN: FR-55461), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Forward Air Controller of the 20th Tactical Air Support Squadron, Da Nang Air Base, South Vietnam, in action in Southeast Asia on 14 May 1968. On that date, Captain Elser was flying in support of a Special Forces patrol that was pinned down by unfriendly small arms and automatic weapons fire and running low on ammunition. Captain Elser directed artillery on the hostile positions and used his marking rockets to pinpoint the hostiles for another Forward Air Controller who arrived with fighters. He then left to pick up and air drop ammunition to the patrol. Captain Elser was under constant heavy fire from the unfriendly positions during the continued passes of the air drop operation. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Captain Elser reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
