The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Master Sergeant Carlos Lopez (ASN: RA-18197334), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 2d Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. During the night of 27 November 1950, Master Sergeant Lopez’s unit was holding a hill near Ipsok, Korea, against a vastly numerically superior hostile force which threatened the task force command post. When he learned that a forward observer had been wounded, he made his way through the mortar-raked area to the front line position from which to direct fire of his mortars. Later he again traversed the hazardous route to repair communication lines which had been disrupted. Although gravely wounded, he returned to the forward position and continued to correct fire of the mortar section until he fell unconscious. Master Sergeant Lopez’s exemplary valor and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the United States Army.
