The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant William G. Long (ASN: RA-6395757), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 9 August 1950 in the vicinity of Yongsan, Korea. On that date Sergeant Long’s company was ordered to seize a hill near the Naktong River. Shortly after the attack was launched the company commander was wounded by enemy mortar fire. Sergeant Long immediately assumed command of the company and notified the battalion commander of the situation, stating he would continue the attack. He issued a hasty attack order and skillfully led the company to its objective. Having seized the hill, he exposed himself to intense hostile mortar and small arms fire as he moved about placing his men in position. From this commanding ground his company was able to render effective fire support to elements of his regiment which were assaulting an adjacent enemy-held hill. Sergeant Long’s action in quickly estimating the situation and his skillful maneuvering of the company was an inspiration to his men and aided materially in the success of the operation. The gallantry and high degree of leadership displayed on this occasion by Sergeant Long reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
