The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class George H. Long (ASN: RA-6954512), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 14 September 1950 in the vicinity of Yongsan, Korea. The advance of tanks attached to the battalion of which he was a member had been halted by an anti-tank and anti-personnel mine field which was covered by intense enemy fire from all types of weapons. Private Long, a member of the battalion Ammunition and Pioneer Platoon, assisted in the clearing of the mine field. Disregarding the enemy fire which swept the area, and displaying complete indifference for his personal safety, he continued in his mission until he was severely wounded. His heroic action in the face of heavy enemy fire was largely instrumental in clearing the field, allowing our tanks to pass and render support to the infantry. The gallantry displayed on this occasion by Private Long reflects great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
