The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Joseph H. London (ASN: 0-60672), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 24 March 1951, near Uijongbu, Korea, while attacking an enemy-held position, Company L was subjected to intense enemy fire. Lieutenant London, leader of the supporting third platoon, moved forward to the first platoon area and, upon finding that the platoon was pinned down and the platoon leader severely wounded, unhesitatingly took command and reorganized the platoon and led it in fighting its way out of the threatened position. Returning to his own platoon through heavy hostile fire, Lieutenant London discovered that enemy machine gun fire was blocking its advance and, with no regard for his own safety, he assaulted the machine gun nest, successfully killing two enemy soldiers with a grenade and bayoneting a third. After notifying the company commander of the tactical situation, he assumed command of three rifle platoons and led a fierce attack against the enemy, forcing him to withdraw with a large number of casualties. Lieutenant London’s outstanding gallantry, leadership, and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and exemplify the high traditions of the military service.
