The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Robert E. Lockhart (RA-17319858), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 2d Engineer Combat Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 19 and 20 July 1953 in the vicinity of Sangjin-ni, North Korea. On those dates, Corporal Lockhart, a squad leader, was a member of a wire laying detail in front of the Main Battle Positions, when the area was suddenly subjected to an intense enemy artillery and mortar barrage preparatory to a large scale assault. After placing his men in defensive positions and assigning their fields of fire, Corporal Lockhart moved into an open trench to procure hand grenades for his men. He encountered a group of enemy soldiers and killed six of them in the ensuing hand-to-hand struggle. When one of his men was wounded, he quickly moved to his aid and carried him to safety. His alertness in setting up a defense and active participation in the battle greatly aided in repulsing the enemy attack. The gallantry in action displayed by Corporal Lockhart reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
