The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Louis V. Lobello (ASN: RA-12266348), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 28 May 1951, in the vicinity of Inje, Korea. On that day Company G was attacking a well dug-in enemy force on Hill 729, consisting of at least four heavy machine gun nests and from thirty to forty other automatic weapons. In the savage assault by Company G a machine gunner who was covering the assault was killed. Corporal Lobello, a gunner on a 57-mm. recoilless rifle, crawled and ran through a withering volume of automatic weapons and small arms fire to the machine gun. Working furiously and exposing himself constantly to the intense enemy fire, he put the machine gun back into action and continued to support the attack and later the withdrawal of the two assault platoons. Corporal Lobello’s gallantry in action, devotion to duty and extreme heroism under fire reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
