The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Carroll B. Livingston (ASN: RA-18351562), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 6 January 1952, Company E was given the mission of attacking and securing Hill 317 near Maryang-san, Korea. A rifle section, led by Sergeant Livingston, was to harass the well-entrenched enemy on one flank while the main body of the company made a surprise assault against the other flank. Sergeant Livingston cautiously led the section to within 100 yards of the enemy strongpoint. From this position he laid down a withering hail of fire, effectively destroying an enemy bunker and killing all of its occupants. Heedless of the intense hostile fire which was now directed at his section, Sergeant Livingston fearlessly continued his advance to within 25 yards of the foe. The main body of the company was now in position for their assault and, by skillfully placing his men in position to deliver the maximum fire on the enemy, Sergeant Livingston directed his section to commence firing. This diversionary attack proved successful as the enemy threw its full support to this section of the defense line, and allowed the main body of Company E to stage its attack with no casualties, while inflicting heavy enemy losses. Sergeant Livingston’s gallant and courageous actions reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
