The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Charles W. Living (ASN: RA-16328681), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 2 June 1951, in the vicinity of Inje, Korea. On that date Company A was engaged in an attack against a well-entrenched enemy force on Hill 451. Sergeant Living, a squad leader, had his squad deployed on the ridge line when the unit was counterattacked. During the attack the squad suffered casualties and in order to keep his squad in position Sergeant Living had to move back and aid in bringing up ammunition. While he was moving up with ammunition, a second attack was launched by the enemy which put the machine gun section out of action. Without hesitation and with complete disregard for the intense enemy fire, he quickly moved up to the machine gun and began to deliver heavy fire into the charging enemy. During this action he was wounded in the head but, ignoring his painful wound, he continued to fire until the enemy was repulsed. A third attack was immediately launched by the enemy and Sergeant Living remained at his weapon, courageously firing until he was mortally wounded. Sergeant Living’s gallantry and selfless devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
