(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Corporal Harry Livchak, United States Army, was awarded the Soldier’s Medal for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy, in Alaska, on 24 January 1943. Corporal Livchak waded twice through the freezing waters of a heavy surf at the base of a fifty foot cliff to assist ashore exhausted members of the crew of a foundered barge. Laboring under the handicap of a previously sustained leg injury, Corporal Livchak, with the aid of a rope, succeeded in assisting the crew members to scale the cliff. The heroism displayed by Corporal Livchak on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
