Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 183 (June 13, 1953)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Chester J. Lis (ASN: RA-12330131), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On the night of 21 May and during the early morning hours of 22 May 1953, a raiding party of Company B, 1st Battalion, had the mission of engaging and destroying the enemy in the vicinity of Pung-Myon, Korea. As the group was advancing toward enemy-held territory, Private Lis, a point man, noticed a movement several yards to his front. Realizing that it might be elements of a friendly patrol, he challenged them several times. Receiving no reply and having ascertained that they were hostile forces, he and his squad commenced firing. The action foiled an enemy maneuver and accounted for numerous hostile casualties. At this time, Private Lis located a mortally wounded Chinese soldier. Although exposed to hostile fire, he dragged the foe back to a friendly position where the soldier could be used for intelligence purposes. When Private Lis returned to his group, he volunteered to search the battle area for four missing comrades. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he again entered the battle area, located the missing men and directed them back to their unit. Private Lis’ outstanding gallantry and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
