Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces in the South Pacific Area, General Orders No. 521 (1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Herbert C. Linville (ASN: 20506000), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at New Georgia, Solomon Islands, on 11 July 1943. Sergeant Linville volunteered to lead a patrol by Japanese forces. Reaching a point thirty-five yards from the gun he saw that the hostile force was greater than anticipated. Rather than jeopardize the entire patrol Sergeant Linville chose to advance alone in an attempt to accomplish the mission. Cognizant that to do so would cost him his life he nevertheless continued forward, attracted the attention of a Japanese machine gunner, and was killed instantly. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
