The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private John L. Ling (ASN: RA-13349097), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 13 February 1951, near Sansong-ni, Korea, Private Ling, a rifleman in one of the lead squads in an attack on an enemy defensive position, was wounded in the leg and knocked to the ground by enemy fire. In spite of his wound Private Ling recovered his weapon and rejoined the attack. Intensive automatic and small arms fire by the enemy succeeded in halting Private Ling’s squad in their advance but did not stop their fire. In the course of this fire fight Private Ling returned twice to the company supply point for ammunition to replenish the squad’s supply, disregarding his wound and the heavy enemy fire. Private Ling’s disregard for his personal safety and gallant actions in the face of enemy fire, are in in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
