The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal John Z. Lindley (ASN: ER-55009836), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 15 February 1951, in the vicinity of Panpo-ri, Korea, the 2d platoon of Company F, 2d Battalion, was on a mission of sweeping the sector forward of the battalion frontlines to the Han River. As the platoon was advancing toward Panpo-ri, it was subjected to heavy enemy small arms and mortar fire, coming from both flanks, trapping the platoon in a valley east of Panpo-ri. Numerous casualties were suffered by the platoon as a result of this devastating fire. Corporal Lindley, with utter disregard for his personal safety, picked up an automatic rifle from one of the wounded, and in the face of this devastating enemy fire moved forward to a position from which he could effectively engage the enemy. From this vantage point he poured a deadly fire from his automatic rifle into the fanatical enemy, inflicting severe casualties and preventing his farther advance. Corporal Lindley remained in this position, exposed to heavy enemy fire, covering his platoon’s withdrawal from the trap with twelve casualties. The gallant display of courage and initiative by Corporal Lindley reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
