The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major Jay Homer Lindell, United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force as an F-16 Fighter Pilot of the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing, in action near Ar Rumaytha, Iraq on 25 February 1991. On that date, Major Lindell directly prevented the capture or death of an eight-man Special Operations Forces team on a reconnaissance mission more than 200 miles beyond enemy lines. Major Lindell descended below a low cloud deck into the heart of the antiaircraft artillery envelope and helped located the eight-man Special Operations Forces team being overrun by Iraqi troops. During three separate one hour periods, he brought his ordnance to bear on the attacking force, stopping their advance and allowing the successful extraction of the Special Operations Forces team. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Major Lindell has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
