Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 38 (February 12, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant [then Sergeant First Class] Albert C. Lilly (ASN: RA-6574809), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 24 September 1950 in the vicinity of Hypochon, Korea. On that date while leading his squad across a bridge over the Hwang River, the squad was suddenly subjected to intense enemy small arms fire delivered from a hill to its front. Sergeant Lilly immediately led several members of the squad in a daring charge against the enemy, inflicting great casualties upon them and forcing them to withdraw in disorder. After moving into the enemy position, his entire platoon became disorganized by heavy enemy fire and Sergeant Lilly became separated from his squad. Undaunted by the confusion and intense fire striking all about him, he rallied a small group of men from different squads and continued the attack. Under his inspiring leadership his men rallied and following his example of bravery closed with the enemy, driving them from the high ground and securing their objective. The gallant leadership of Sergeant Lilly on this occasion was a source of pride and inspiration to his comrades and reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
