Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 80 (October 28, 1950)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Ralph Gammill Lillard (ASN: RA-37062199), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company H, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, during the period 31 August 1950 to 4 September 1950 in the vicinity of Yongsan, Korea. During this period he commanded a section of machine guns which was defending a battalion observation post, which had been surrounded by enemy forces. He constantly exposed himself to heavy enemy artillery, mortar, and small arms fire as he moved from one gun position to another, encouraging and steadying his men, and directing the fire which ultimately broke up the fanatic frontal assaults. Under his courageous leadership the gunners stuck to their posts and wiped out at least four enemy machine gun crews. On 4 September 1950, it was decided to abandon the position and attempt to return to friendly lines in small groups. Sergeant Lillard led one of the infiltrating groups and, largely as a result of his superior leadership and scouting ability, his entire group reached the safety of their own lines without casualties. Sergeant Lillard’s inspirational leadership, gallantry, and devotion to duty in the face of great odds reflect great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service.
