Department of the Army, General Orders No. 69 (October 14, 1948)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Corporal Sammie Liles (ASN: RA-44144063), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of the 7737th Headquarters and Service Company, at Bad Nauheim, Germany, on 14 June 1948. When a fire broke out while gasoline was being unloaded into his 2,000-gallon trailer tank from a railway tank car, he jumped into the cab of his prime mover, at the risk of being badly burned, and drove the blazing trailer a safe distance away, where he got out, unhooked the prime mover from the burning trailer, and returned to the siding where the railway tank car, which was one of four tank cars, was burning furiously. Corporal Liles then proceeded to uncouple the tank cars which were not burning from the one that was on fire and, driving his prime mover on the railroad tracks, pulled the non-ignited cars to safety.
