Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 349 (November 27, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Charles E. Liggett (ASN: US-53096801), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On the night of 25 July 1952, an outpost, known as “Kelly”, near Koyang-dae, Korea, was under heavy enemy attack. The hostile forces succeeded in occupying the position and were setting up defenses in preparation for a counter-attack. Corporal Liggett, realizing the need for immediate action before the enemy became firmly entrenched, volunteered to lead his squad in an attempt to retake the outpost. On two different occasions his squad was repulsed by the murderous enemy fire. During these two attempts Corporal Liggett repeatedly exposed himself to the devastating enemy fire as he shouted words of encouragement to his men and furnished covering fire for their withdrawal. During the third assault his squad succeeded in reaching the top of the hill and driving the enemy from their positions. As this successful attack was in progress, Corporal Liggett, with complete disregard for his own personal safety and while exposing himself to the intense enemy fire, personally evacuated one seriously wounded man to the base of the hill and the body of his platoon leader who had been killed during the battle. As the enemy were retreating down the slope of the outpost, he proceeded after them, inflicting casualties among their ranks with rifle and grenade fire. Corporal Liggett’s determination and gallantry under enemy fire reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
