    Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 106 (April 25, 1953), Amended by G.O. No. 194 (1953)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Murray Lichtman (ASN: US-51118851), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. In the early morning hours of 25 November 1952, elements of Company I, 3d Battalion, of which Corporal Lichtman was a member, was assigned the mission of defending friendly positions on Hill “270” and “Jackson Heights”, in the vicinity of Hak Tong-Ni, Korea. The friendly elements on Hill “270” were subjected to hostile mortar and artillery fire almost simultaneously with the forces on “Jackson Heights”. When the forces on “Jackson Heights” called for flares to illuminate the area, Corporal Lichtman exposed himself to the enemy fire as he dashed across the intensely shelled terrain to his mortar. Although seriously wounded in the attempt, he reached his mortar and remained there firing illuminating flares until he was mortally wounded. As a result of Corporal Lichtman’s action, his fellow soldiers were afforded the illumination needed, enabling them to repulse the hostile attack. Corporal Lichtman’s outstanding gallantry, initiative and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
