The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Roy E. Lewis (ASN: 0-2121002), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery C, 9th Field Artillery Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 2 June 1951, elements of Company E, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry, with an artillery observation section attached, were given the mission of moving forward and occupying an outpost near Yangmum, Korea. Nearing the objective, the unit was subjected to intense hostile grenade and small arms fire which destroyed the radio used for artillery contact. Lieutenant Lewis, realizing the impossibility of contact with the artillery, unhesitatingly assumed command of two rifle squads and led them in a flank attack on their objective. Although he received painful face and leg wounds, he refused to be evacuated, choosing to remain and lead the attacking forces. Inspired by his courageous and determined actions, the riflemen continued their advance and successfully overcame the enemy positions. Lieutenant Lewis’ gallantry reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
