Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 161 (June 20, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Norman F. O’Shea (ASN: 0-548184), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action on 24 December 1944, in Belgium. An intense bombing destroyed numerous buildings and started a rapidly spreading fire. First Lieutenant O’Shea volunteered to aid in rescuing civilians trapped in some of the damaged houses. Despite falling flak and fire raging in the buildings where they were working, First Lieutenant Shea and his comrades freed three civilians, saving their lives. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by First Lieutenant O’Shea reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
