The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class Francis D. Jolliff (ASN: US-54964753), United States Army, for gallantry in action involving close combat against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Jolliff distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 8 August 1968, while serving as a Medical Aidman with Company C, 4th Battalion, 39th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, on a reconnaissance in force mission. After his platoon had sustained four casualties in initial contact with the enemy, Specialist Jolliff, without regard for his own safety, ran into the midst of the battle in order to administer aid to the wounded men. While he was attending to one of the casualties, enemy fire wounded the man a second time, but Specialist Jolliff continued his treatment and then directed the evacuation. He continued to brave the intense fire throughout the action in order to reach and treat the casualties. Specialist Fourth Class Jolliff’s extraordinary heroism in close combat against a Viet Cong force is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
