Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 267 (July 12, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant John Helmer Leno (ASN: US-56057699), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 22 December 1951 in the vicinity of Tong-Manani-Polmukkae, Korea. On that date, a platoon of Company C moved out on a daylight patrol on an unnumbered hill north of Star Hill. During the assault on the objective, Sergeant Leno, acting as a one-man machine gun team, took his weapon to a forward and completely exposed position. His accurate and deadly fire caused the enemy numerous casualties. As the attack moved forward he picked up the machine gun and, firing from the hip, charged the hostile positions. When his weapon had a stoppage he unhesitatingly continued forward storming the enemy emplacements and closing with them in hand to hand combat. Sergeant Leno’s heroic and determined assault bewildered and frightened the enemy causing them to withdraw. His valiant actions so inspired the remainder of his platoon that they, following his gallant example, rushed forward and soon occupied the hill. Later, after the objective was secure, Sergeant Leno was fatally wounded by a stray mortar round. His courageous and selfless actions not only were the main factors in routing the enemy but also were a great inspiration to all witnessing his deeds. The heroism and intrepidity displayed by Sergeant Leno will live forever in the hearts of his comrades.
