The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal [then Private] Angel T. Lemos (ASN: US-56147898), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company H, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 15 September 1951 in the vicinity of Worun-ni, Korea. On this date corporal Lemos was a machine gunner in the heavy machine gun platoon of Company H with the assigned mission of assisting rifle troops in securing a vital position on Hill 1005, a strong point in the Battle for Heartbreak Ridge. The enemy immediately launched a furious counterattack, striking back with intense mortar and small arms fire. Throughout the night Corporal Lemos remained at his position, continuously manning his weapon, forcing the enemy to retreat. When enemy troops infiltrated lines of defense, he fought them off throwing grenade after grenade into their midst as they neared his position. Corporal Lemos continued his courageous action until severely wounded and was forced to be evacuated. The gallantry in action on this occasion contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission and is in accordance with the esteemed traditions of military service.
