The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Second Lieutenant] Carl A. Lemons (ASN: 0-2262869), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 4 July 1951, near Chich-on, Korea, when Company B, 1st Battalion, occupying defensive positions on Hill 586, was fiercely attacked by two regiments of the enemy, Lieutenant Lemons’ platoon was threatened with envelopment. Ordering a withdrawal to more tenable positions, Lieutenant Lemons repeatedly exposed himself to the intense hostile fire while directing the displacement and organizing the defensive line. Upon observing his machine gunner knocked out of action by an enemy grenade, he quickly manned the weapon; upon expending its ammunition, he continued to hold the position against the foe by accurate fire from his carbine. Lieutenant Lemons’ gallant and courageous leadership reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
