The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Paul A. Lehnhardt (ASN: RA-16358544), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 29 July 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On this date Company I was in the attack to secure vital enemy-held positions. During the ensuing action, the squad of which Private Lehnhardt was a member, was pinned down by an intense hail of automatic weapons and grenade fire from an enemy emplacement on an extremely hazardous terrain. Private Lehnhardt, with complete disregard for his personal safety, advanced toward the enemy bunker firing his rifle and throwing grenades, killing the occupants of the emplacement and destroying the automatic weapon. He continued this courageous action inflicting numerous enemy casualties, thus enabling his unit to advance and secure its objective with a minimum of friendly casualties. The gallantry in action and outstanding devotion to duty displayed by Private Lehnhardt on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
