The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Frederick J. Lehman (ASN: 0-1330087), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 11 April 1951, in the vicinity of the Hwachon Reservoir, Korea. On that date he was platoon leader which had the mission of attacking Hill 1031 against an enemy force well-entrenched in reinforced pillboxes. One of his squads, upon reaching the crest of the hill, was forced to withdraw due to the intense enemy automatic weapons and small arms fire. Lieutenant Lehman, with complete disregard for his personal safety, reorganized his platoon and led it in another attack, using machine gun fire. As the platoon closed with the enemy, he fearlessly assaulted a hostile machine gun position, destroying the gun and killing its entire crew. His courageous action under intense fire so inspired his men that they were able to rout the enemy and hold their positions. The gallantry displayed by Lieutenant Lehman reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
