The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Richard Charles Leffler (ASN: US-55065909), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Heavy Mortar Company, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 12 September 1951 in the vicinity of Pia-ri, Korea. On that date Private Leffler, an assistant gunner in a mortar squad, was with a unit which was providing supporting fire for riflemen assaulting a strongly fortified enemy-held hill. Due to the heavy enemy resistance a large volume of supporting fire was required. During the ensuing action the ammunition of the friendly elements was running critically low. Private Leffler, realizing the seriousness of the situation, voluntarily let his covered position and crossed the fire swept area to secure the vital ammunition. Disregarding his personal safety and the intense hostile fire, he made repeated trips over the hazardous terrain carrying ammunition until he was fatally wounded by enemy mortar fire. As a result of his self-sacrificing devotion to duty friendly forces were able to continue in the support of assaulting riflemen. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Leffler reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
