The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fourth Class Joseph W. Leffelman, United States Army, for exceptionally heroic actions in support of FTX Orbiting Eagle IV on a helicopter rescue mission on 21 March 1975. Specialist Leffelman distinguished himself by valorous actions as the medic at the scene of a helicopter crash on Vehgel Drop Zone. As the rescue aircraft landed, the gravity of the situation became apparent. All crew members of the downed aircraft were still on board. The engine was still running and fuel was spurting from its ruptured cells. Maintaining a high degree of tenacity and professionalism and in spite of hazards inherent in the situation, Specialist Leffelman rose to the challenge confronting him. Realizing that all personnel were in great danger, Specialist Leffelman expeditiously aided in the extraction of the members of the crew and then administered emergency medical treatment rapidly and professionally. Through his courage, devotion to duty and outstanding professionalism, Specialist Leffelman contributed immeasurably to the rapid recovery of the downed crew and the success of this lifesaving mission. Specialist Leffelman’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon him, his unit and the United States Army.
