The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Luke D. LeFevre (ASN: 0-64350), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery A, 37th Field Artillery Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 6 October 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon, North Korea. On that date Lieutenant LeFevre was serving as Artillery Forward Observer with the French Battalion which was engaged in a bigger and determined conflict with a fanatical enemy for the possession of Hill 281. During that crucial struggle Lieutenant LeFevre went many hours without rest and constantly exposed himself to enemy fire while accurately adjusting friendly artillery fire. At approximately 1430 hours on that date, the hostile forces unleashed an exceptionally heavy barrage of artillery fire, during which he continued to direct an accurate and effective fire upon the enemy positions, until mortally wounded by enemy mortar fire. The accurate and uninterrupted artillery support provided by these courageous and selfless actions were largely responsible for the successful conclusion of the friendly forces in securing the objective. The outstanding gallantry in action and consummate devotion to performance of duty displayed by Lieutenant LeFevre reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
