Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 12 (January 8, 1953)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] George R. Lawlor (ASN: 0-136083), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. Captain Lawlor, as platoon leader of the Pioneer and Ammunition Platoon, was assigned the mission of constructing a “Smith Fence”, through his entire battalion area, in the vicinity of Kojanjari, Korea. Upon approaching the Company L area on 3 February 1952, Captain Lawlor discovered that the path through which he was constructing his protective fence, was obstructed by a heavy concentration of mines and improvised booby traps. Aware that none of the men in his platoon were trained to clear mine fields and that specialists were unavailable, he voluntarily and courageously ignored his personal safety as he immediately began to personally clear a safe lane through the hazardous area. While crawling arduous hours on his hands and knees calmly disarming numerous mines, he was constantly under enemy observation and frequently subjected to hostile mortar and artillery fire but undaunted by enemy aggression he tirelessly and fearlessly continued to disarm the mines, which were concealed in the snow and brush, until he successfully completed his mission. Captain Lawlor’s extreme gallantry, intrepid actions, and outstanding courage were instrumental in the successful erection of a defense line in his assigned area and reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
