The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Nicholas Lewkow (ASN: ER-42187760), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 10 January 1951 in the vicinity of Yuhon, Korea. Company B was engaged in a heavy firefight and, because of the numerical superiority of the enemy, was forced to withdraw. After the company had reorganized, it was discovered that valuable equipment had been left behind. Sergeant Lewkow volunteered to lead a patrol back to the area to retrieve the equipment. While the patrol was examining the equipment, the enemy concentrated a heavy volume of fire on the area and pinned the patrol down. Sergeant Lewkow, with complete disregard for his safety, stood upright and returned the hostile fire, deliberately drawing fire upon himself and enabling his patrol to effect a withdrawal to safety. After rejoining the company, he again volunteered to lead another patrol to seek out and determine the strength of the enemy. When the patrol was fired upon and was threatened with encirclement, Sergeant Lewkow gave the order to withdraw and remained behind to engage the enemy with rifle fire. Under his covering fire the patrol effected its withdrawal without sustaining a casualty. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant Lewkow reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
