The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal George R. Lavey (ASN: RA-15414856), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Heavy Mortar Company, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 25 September 1950, as a battalion advanced through a pass near Chang-Su, Korea, the enemy attacked the rear elements and blocked the road. Corporal Lavey and one other man proceeded to the road block to attempt penetration. When he came under intense fire while trying to put the machine gun into action, he calmly dispatched one enemy with his carbine; he then assisted in moving a light machine gun to high ground from which point he joined in a fire fight for an hour. When the enemy attacked his emplacement from the reverse of the hill he successfully drove them off. At the end of the hour he had cleared the pass. Corporal Lavey’s gallant determination and exceptional military skill reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the United States Army.
