The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Corporal] William LaRue (ASN: ER-37615719), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 14 February 1951, in the vicinity of Chipyong-ni, Korea. On that date he was a light vehicle driver with an infantry unit which was engaged in defensive actions against a numerically superior enemy force. Due to the intensity of the enemy fire, this unit received numerous casualties and the company aid men were finding it difficult to minister to their needs. Realizing this, Sergeant LaRue voluntarily left his covered position and under the intense enemy fire moved to the side of wounded comrades to administer first aid. When litter jeeps were no longer available, he again crossed open terrain and returned with his vehicle, loaded the wounded men and removed them to the battalion aid station. Upon returning to the company command post, he learned that ammunition was critically needed in front line positions. Again, with complete disregard for his personal safety, he organized a carrying party and delivered the needed ammunition, thereby contributing greatly to his unit’s successful repulsion of the enemy. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant LaRue on this occasion was unquestionably responsible for saving the lives of numerous men and reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
