The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Jason Carroll Larson (ASN: O-2263554), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 16 February 1952, a platoon from Company B was given the mission of seizing and holding “O.P. Kelly”, an outpost approximately 2200 yards forward of the main line of resistance near Koyangdae, Korea, which the enemy had seized a few days previously. After deploying three squads of his platoon around the base of the hill to provide support fire, and friendly artillery had bombarded the hill, Lieutenant Larson personally led the assault squad in their attack on the hostile emplacements. Having advanced to within twenty-five yards of the top of the hill with little opposition, the squad was suddenly subjected to a withering hail of close range automatic weapons, small arms and grenade fire. Hostile fire from an adjoining hill had neutralized the friendly support fire, leaving the assault troops in a precarious position. Realizing that immediate action must be taken, Lieutenant Larson completely disregarded his personal safety as he jumped from his positions of cover and charged the nearest enemy bunker, spraying the positions with such a lethal volume of fire that its occupants were killed or effectively silenced. This devastating fire forced other enemy troops to leave their positions and flee in disorder but as Lieutenant Larson continued to clear the hill, he was hit and mortally wounded by a hostile weapon firing from a nearby hill. His fearless leadership and undaunted courage were instrumental in his platoon’s occupying the outpost without further casualties. Lieutenant Larson’s outstanding gallantry in the face of enemy fire reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
