Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 596 (October 11, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) Martin J. Larkin (ASN: 0-537886), United States Army, for gallantry in action as Commanding Officer of Company F, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 3 August 1951 in the vicinity of Changga-Hyon, Korea. On this date Company F had the mission of attacking and securing a strategic position. While advancing toward their objective, Company F was halted by intense enemy mortar and artillery fire. During the ensuing battle one of the platoon leaders was seriously wounded and his platoon became disorganized. Captain Larkin, with disregard for his personal safety, advanced through heavy enemy fire to reorganize the platoon. When the company was again pinned down by artillery fire, Captain Larkin exposed himself to enemy fire and moved to a position where he could direct fire upon the enemy. When the company was ordered to withdraw, he personally supervised the withdrawal and did not leave his position until his men were in a position of safety. The gallantry in action displayed by Captain Larkin reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
