The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Robert L. Lanier (ASN: RA-14227067), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 72d Tank Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 1 September 1950 near Yongsan, Korea. The tank of which Corporal Lanier was a crew member was subjected to enemy small arms, machine gun, anti-tank, and heavy mortar fire during an attack by the enemy forces along the Haktong River line. While engaging the enemy, Corporal Lanier observed a fallen comrade on a nearby hill. He requested permission from his tank commander to go to the aid of the wounded man. After receiving permission to do so, Corporal Lanier, with utter disregard for his own personal safety, left the protective armor of his tank and crawled approximately 75 yards through intense enemy fire to the severely wounded man. After applying what first aid was possible, and despite the continuing enemy fire, he carried the wounded man to the tank in order that he might be evacuated. His action served as an inspiration to all who observed the act. The intrepid gallantry displayed by Corporal Lanier in aiding a fallen comrade at great risk to his own life reflects great credit upon himself and is in keeping with the highest standards and traditions of the military service.
