Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 724 (November 16, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Charles R. Lange (ASN: US-52106763), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 22 September 1951 in the vicinity of Samtae-dong, Korea. On that date Private Lange was with a unit which was in defensive positions under intense hostile fire. During this action Private Lange observed a wounded comrade lying in a position exposed to enemy observation and fire. Without hesitating he left his covered emplacement and crossed the fire-swept area to the side of the wounded man. Upon discovering that the stricken man had a broken leg, Private Lange improvised a splint and placed it on the leg. Realizing that he alone could not carry his comrade back to an aid station, he placed the man in a position of comparative safety. At this point he returned to the friendly lines where he immediately secured a litter team and directed them in the evacuation of his stricken comrade. His heroic act undoubtedly saved the wounded man’s life. The gallantry and devotion to duty and comrade displayed by Private Lange on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
