The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) Vincent W. Lang (ASN: 0-62841), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of 2d Reconnaissance Company, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 14 February 1951, in the vicinity of Chuam-ni, Korea. On this date the 2d Reconnaissance Company and Company L, 9th Infantry Regiment, were entirely surrounded by an estimated enemy regiment, holding commanding positions on the high ground surrounding the village of Chuam-ni. Confronted with a large scale enemy attack, Lieutenant Lang, as a platoon leader, directed tank and machine gun fire on enemy mortars and machine. Guns which were delivering deadly fire on friendly troops. His platoon’s fire destroyed three of the four enemy mortars and an enemy machine gun, thereby considerably reducing the effectiveness of the enemy attack. Subsequently, while Company L was withdrawing, Lieutenant Lang led the column. In this action the enemy-held the ground on both sides of the road from which they continually launched close range attacks. As tank commander, Lieutenant Lang, by his own machine gun fire and by directing the fire of his tank gun, succeeded in destroying three rocket launcher teams, one satchel charge team, and three machine guns of the attacking enemy. During the withdrawal, the safety of the entire company depended largely upon the effectiveness of fire and the continuous movement of the lead tank. Lieutenant Lang kept the column moving continuously while clearing the road of enemy with his tank weapons. The gallantry displayed by Lieutenant Lang reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
