The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Richard A. Laney (ASN: RA-15457210), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On the morning of 17 November 1952, Company L, 3d Battalion, of which Private Laney was point man, was assigned the mission of assaulting a hostile position in the vicinity of Kachil-Li, Korea. Upon reaching the objective, the company was subjected to intense hostile fire. After the friendly forces secured the objective, Private Laney took up a position in its forward area. Later, when enemy forces re-attacked, Private Laney saw four of his fellow soldiers lying wounded. He exposed himself to the hostile fire as he moved about evacuating the men. He then returned to his company to aid in defending the position. Private Laney’s outstanding gallantry, initiative and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
