The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Maurice C. Lane (ASN: 0-63427), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 25 March 1951, near Uijongbu, Korea, Company I was part of a force attacking Hill 361, which was fiercely defended by an estimated enemy battalion. Lieutenant Lane’s platoon was given the mission of neutralizing enemy strong points on the left flank of the company zone of action. The enemy had excellent observation and fields of fire and, as the lead element of Lieutenant Lane’s platoon approached the enemy positions, it was subjected to heavy enemy fire. Lieutenant Lane skillfully deployed his men and led them up the steep slopes toward the nearest enemy strong point but the intense volume of enemy fire forced them to seek cover. Lieutenant Lane, realizing that such actions could only result in heavy casualties, continuously exposed himself to enemy fire and so inspired his men that they were able to overcome all enemy resistance except one strongly fortified position on the crest of the hill. When friendly mortar, artillery, automatic weapons, and small arms fire failed to dislodge the enemy, he ordered his leading squad to fix bayonets and charge the position but, after having advanced approximately thirty yards, the squad was pinned down by accurate hostile fire. Lieutenant Lane then personally led the squad in a bayonet assault which completely routed the enemy. At all times during this action Lieutenant Lane was a source of inspiration to his men and his outstanding gallantry reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
