Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 215 (June 24, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal George A. Lane (ASN: US-51000301), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 24 May 1951, in the vicinity of Kungol, Korea. On that day Corporal Lane deliberately exposed himself to deadly enemy automatic weapons fire to place his machine gun in a position where he could lay down heavy fire on the hostile positions. After gaining fire superiority, Corporal Lane kept the enemy pinned down while his own unit advanced to better positions. During the ensuing battle, he fired his machine gun until his ammunition was expended. When he had no more ammunition the enemy was again able to bring effective fire upon his position. He was killed by a burst from the enemy machine gun which he had successfully kept pinned down while his unit moved to protective cover. Corporal Lane’s gallantry and selfless devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
